It's All About Greed

I think, my topic to write about today will be Greed, because it affects us all and can destroy you in an instant. Greed is one of the seven deadly sins, but we can all fall foul of this characteristic no matter who we are. If you want to enjoy the fruits of your labour then be careful of succumbing to greed.

There have been many times throughout my life where greed has taken hold of me and the positive progress that I had made up to that moment is suddenly washed away through greed. There are many examples of greed and it usually involves some sort of financial gain. You usually know when greed has taken hold and at that moment you need to step back and think before taking action. And, I mean think and don’t succumb to greed because usually you will end up on the losing side.
Some of the most successful investors will tell you that avoiding greed is one way to keeping the shirt on your back and a profit in the bank. Remember that until you bank your profits in the stock market you haven’t made a profit.

Another example is getting to a final table playing poker only to let greed and the lack of patience destroy your chances of winning. Until you have mastered the art of patience and can push greed out of your mind the chances of you winning and enjoying the game are minimal.

Are you listening,  what are you dreaming?

The Most Important Number In Our Universe

Just think about it for a few seconds, minutes, weeks, months, or more if you like. What number comes to your mind? Now, to define the parameters think of whole numbers, not a fraction or negative numbers. It’s your choice, but, I’m trying to think ‘Outside the box’ as they say. I wonder if you have come to the same conclusion as I do? Have you heard about the singularity? Well, there are several singularities, but the one I am referring to: Is the ‘Technological singularity’, which was coined by Vernor Vinge (sci-fi author and scientist), It describes the point in time when superhuman artificially intelligent computers can continually make iterations of recursive self-improvement, thereby, he predicts the “ Human era will end.”

Don’t get alarmed, even though that singularity is fast approaching. Vinge’s argument is sound, but I think, the human mind has the ability to perceive what we humans call intuition, which currently sets us apart from computers. There could come a time when superhuman artificially intelligent computers have developed the added ability of intuition and when this happens you have a singularity or an event horizon where you can’t predict reality through any means what will happen next. Thinking ‘Outside the box’ again the most important number in the universe is 'One' because zero doesn’t exist. You see, zero was invented by many early civilizations as a means to record and count numbers. Nothing is a figment of man’s imagination there is no such thing, so, one is another singularity. God said, "I am the one."

Why Do We Fail To Follow Our Intuition Most Of The Time?

The Bookshop Guru
Why do we fail to follow our intuition most of the time?  Why is it a mystery, but so is the universe? I believe, that our intuition is our sixth sense.  Perhaps, over the eons of time and evolution, we have forgotten how to rely on our intuition, after all, what’s the point of it being there if we don’t trust it and use it? But, for some inescapable reason, we do not trust our intuition most of the time.

Now, consider what René Descartes (philosopher, mathematician, and scientist) said, “cogito ergo sum,” translated into English: “I think, therefore I am,” which means if I doubted my existence then either someone else is doing the doubting or I exist. Descartes believed that sensory perceptions were spontaneous, and of free will, and so came to him from a world outside his mind, and that God would not deceive him.

It’s as if someone else was controlling our thoughts on some decisions we fail to follow our gut instinct or intuition and sometime later we regret not following our intuition. You have to admit to yourself that’s how it goes for most of us humans and I use the ‘Almighty’ word of ‘Human,’ because as for as we know we are the only species of animal that has the ability to act on their intuitions in an egocentric manner.

Conscience is a guiding force so logic would suggest our intuition must be another guiding force similar to the Star Wars “May the force be with you” words used in the story. Just because science at present cannot describe human thoughts or our intuitions we should not forget it was only a few years ago we realized there was more to the universe than just our ‘Milky Way.’ Imagine, that, just like a fish in a fishbowl.

Can I prove to you that our intuition is our sixth sense? Well, it’s easy to tell a cat from a pack of dogs. If you need proof, then ask yourself this question: What is the most important number in the universe? When you have the answer you will see the logic of the answer. “If you do not expect it, you will not find the unexpected, for it is hard to find and difficult.” (Padmanabhan & Tuzhilin, 1999)

The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 8

The Bookshop Guru

The Carolina Panthers face the Indianapolis Colts  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Panthers to win the game. The consensus is around 53% in favour with the Panthers (-5.5), and the bookies make the Panthers the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Newton vs Luck   and I prefer Newton. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Panthers (6-0) with the best defence and defence wins games. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 5.5 point game?  So, that probably means the Panthers to win the game, and to cover the (- 5.5) point spread. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

Personal Identity Authentication: The Next Step in a Deck of Cards against the Terrorist Threat

Recent events such as the refugee crisis across the European Union should have promoted the debate on the need to introduce national identity cards (NID) in the UK. We can see the benefits of introducing NIDs as a means to protect resources such as National Health Service benefits against so-called holiday day health cheats. Illegal immigration overnight would at last be a statistic you could trust. Would it stop terrorism, well, that’s debatable, but that’s not the reason why NID cards should be introduced the real reason is so obvious it's staring you in the face? That’s right Syd, it’s so simple. Think about it and read on and I will tell you.

Terrorism can implode numerous economic dimensions as it attempts to target its message, while world communities debate the effects of introducing identity cards (ID) cards as a measure for improving the security of states and their citizens. Liberal rights groups dispute the idea of national identity cards (NID) as diminishing the rights of privacy of the individual, while not safeguarding individuality against totalitarianism. Governments assert that the individual’s privacy will be protected by relevant data protection legislation specific to member states, although cross-border data transfer remains an issue why most opponents of NID schemes regard this process as potentially affecting human rights. I disagree with this libertarian view based on the science of economics. To manage a complex organization you need sophisticated systems to manage and plan ahead, otherwise, we would not need calendars.

The 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center has created a heightened sense of urgency in many governments while they attempt to answer the threat of terrorism. Some form of NID system is proposed as one measure in securing the internal security of many countries and the UK. The technology to administer these large ID authentication systems are proven, tested, and secure enough to process millions of authorizations. Effective countermeasures are essential against terrorism, but the ethical use of information technology and the laws that protect against misuse are principles by which opponents argue ID cards are an ineffective measure when inappropriately insecure as recent cases show, but, that is not a reason not to have NID cards that's just poor management.

Recent events like the TalkTalk saga show how the protection of databases is essential and they should always be encrypted regardless of what interface it's interacting with. As Sun Tzu said, “Don’t court your own disaster.”

Moving on, running safe systems is not rocket science, it just takes common sense and always keeping in mind what will happen often, does. The efficacy of NID cards is essential for the protection against fraud of state benefits, it’s as simple as that.

The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 7

The Bookshop Guru

The New York Jets face the New England Patriots  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Patriots to win the game. The consensus is around 69% in favour with the Jets (+8.5), and the bookies make the Patriots the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Brady vs Fitzpatrick   and I prefer Brady by a mile. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Patriots (5-0) with the best defence and defence wins games. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 8.5 point game? The head to head  over 10 games are 8-2 in the Patriots favour.  So, that probably means the Patriots to win the game, and to cover the (- 8.5) point spread. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!
