The Art of Being Rejected

The Bookshop Guru

This is a true story, which happened to me several years ago now. In a way it’s a bit like one of those stories you would expect under “the tales of the unexpected” the TV series. But, with one thing missing, it’s not a creepy or a frightening story. Anyhow, it was one of those days when I would hop into my car with a couple of my paintings and drive to search out some art galleries. This was something I did quite frequently back then. I would wander off into the unknown and see what happened. It was mid-summer, the height of the holiday season as I parked up and took a stroll into the seaside town looking for art galleries. I felt sure I was in the right place. The watercolours I had tucked under my arm were a couple of seascapes, which would sell well in this seaside town, I thought. The watercolours were quite modern, but tighter than I usually paint especially these days.

I took a deep breath and entered the art gallery right on the seafront.  My first impression was of an art gallery with very little white space. Floor to ceiling the walls were plastered with art of all shapes and sizes.

I walked over and introduced myself to the owner of the gallery. I began by explaining why I was there. Then I propped my two watercolours below her desk so she could take a look. The lady began by saying she thought my paintings were too modern. I listened to what she had to say about my work. But, just then a customer came into the gallery and walked around as the gallery owner continued talking about my work. The gallery owner said, “I don't think your work would sell well in here, it’s too modern.” I tried to persuade her otherwise, but then the customer who had just come in came over to where I was standing and stood looking at my paintings. Whereupon she asked me how much would these paintings of mine cost? I explained how much for the pair and she agreed to buy them there and then. I even had to ask the gallery owner who was listening to this conversation if I could borrow a pen as the customer was writing me a cheque.

The strangest part was after the customer had gone the gallery owner still wouldn't consider selling my artwork in her gallery even after she had to eat her words. I don't know if she was still embarrassed or what, but when I breathed fresh air the buzz was fantastic. I guess sometimes it’s difficult to convince some people even when they have had to eat their own words.

What are the Tipping Points? The Coming Environmental Apocalypse

The short answer is: We don’t know. The environmental changes and the rise of more intense weather events are now more apparent to everyone on this planet, it’s only a few vested interests which denies the problem.

If people think the recent agreement at the COP2015 Climate Change sparks a feeling of ‘everything will be alright’ are living on a different planet. We don’t have to the middle of this century to limit a 2 degree increase in global average temperatures. Look around the world, the tipping points have probably already happened. The chain reaction of events as the temperature increases in different parts of the world has unknown consequences that are too unpredictable to be modelled to any degree of certainty. People need to get round to thinking completely differently, otherwise, we may have fewer years than you think to stabilise the planet.

When people have to walk around Beijing (Capital of China) with face masks everyday just so they can breathe tells the stark reality of ignoring climate change and just as important the pollution which has a direct effect on everyone. If you want to burn coal (we should use the resource because it’s no good underground) then, why not, as long as, you fit chimney scrubber technology (This takes out the harmful particles and absorbs the CO2 emissions from the power stations) then, this waste can be recycled and the people can then breathe again without the need for face masks.

Just think the future is; electric vehicles (no waste technology (NWT)) and your problems are solved more or less overnight. Why do you think Volkswagen had a problem with its cars? We can’t continue to pollute the atmosphere and if you can’t breathe, then, what is the point of driving a petrol or diesel car when the future is now and that’s electric cars. Just think; if the invention of the combustion engine had never happened, perhaps, we would have had a cleaner environment and oil would have been a lightly used product to grease the blades of a turbine?

One example of ignoring climate change is the following: The floods that we were told were once in a hundred year events are now more like every other year and happening all over the world.

The choice is: We need to move to non-waste thinking; electric cars, solar power stations, solar technology, wind and wave power, and more innovation. Now, do you get the picture ~ the future is now; we can’t wait until they’ve sold every last barrel of oil, otherwise, your children are going to inherit a toilet. Just remember, if you don’t think you’re breathing in pollution, then, try not picking your nose at night! The long term effects of breathing in all this pollution is anyone’s guess.

A Review of ‘The Moveable Feast’ by Ernest Hemingway

The Bookshop Guru
A master storyteller is how I would describe Hemingway. Those of you that have read his most popular and well known novels need no introduction into how the clarity and originality of his stories grip you from the beginning. I was intrigued when I found this book, because although it’s described as fiction, it is really an account of him as a poor and struggling unknown writer living in Paris in the 1920’s. His memories have a bouquet that lingers and captivates you into understanding much more about the man, almost as if you can smell and taste the wine as he recalls the café life. Hemingway describes Paris as a great treasure given to you, and regardless of how poor you are, you could still live and work well there. You could take Paris with you wherever you went and so ‘The Moveable Feast.’

Hemingway recalls his encounters with other writers such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and many more. Interestingly, his early confidence is best described as ‘unsure’ without the authority of a novel to his name. His friend Fitzgerald talks about his latest book ‘The Great Gatsby’ and how good reviews hadn’t translated into meaningful sales. Hemingway then recalls how he spent a whole morning of work just to write a paragraph and he wasn’t sure how he could ever write anything as long as a novel. But he also recalls his disapproval of Fitzgerald’s practice of changing short stories to suit the twists required for magazine submission. Hemingway describes this practice as ‘whoring,’ but Fitzgerald says he has no choice as he needs the money to fund the writing of future books.

Throughout the meandering of life as a young writer Hemingway leads you into his world and shares with you all the beauty of living and loving life. There is a vibrancy of colour in the way the words make it onto the page of the story, which is how Hemingway recalls his early struggle to tell a story.

A great read!

The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 8

The Bookshop Guru

The Carolina Panthers face the Indianapolis Colts  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Panthers to win the game. The consensus is around 53% in favour with the Panthers (-5.5), and the bookies make the Panthers the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Newton vs Luck   and I prefer Newton. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Panthers (6-0) with the best defence and defence wins games. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 5.5 point game?  So, that probably means the Panthers to win the game, and to cover the (- 5.5) point spread. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

The Rise of the Robot

The Bookshop Guru

Currently, artificial intelligence (AI) is at the dawn of a new age. We use AI in a host of software applications and products from mobile phones to cancer screening.

Don’t get me wrong, computers, robots, and software applications have had a beneficial effect on mankind. There are robots that do precision engineering, welding, and manufacturing to assemble line components and a host of other jobs that require precision and repetitive actions. There are also robots that do dangerous jobs such as handling nuclear waste and its disposal and bomb disposal. These examples are just a few of the tasks we trust to robots that are beneficial to mankind.

Some people ask if we should give legal rights to robots. I say no because they are not living entities such as animals. They don’t have feelings and the only intelligence they have is what the programmer gave the robot. In my view, the biggest problem with A.I. is its lack of perception, what we humans call intuition. Read ‘The Secret of Intuition’ and ‘Adding Alpha’ articles I wrote some time ago that will further explain my argument.

The future, well, that is difficult to predict. How do you know you’re not an experiment? Read why to click here?

It’s all Over the Front Page – I Think I'm Going Mad

The Bookshop Guru

Yes, we all live in the space age, but what lemon wrote the Microsoft Word spell checker algorithm? Because when you have to correctly guess the spelling of a word – to one letter of correctness before the spell checker gives you a choice of words or the word you are trying to spell – then I ask you: what is the point?

The other day (well it happens all the time) I was busy trying to write an article and well, you could say over the years my spelling has improved, but I have my moments when I can’t spell ‘shit for toffees’ if you know what I mean.  I was trying to spell (sophisticated) and well, you guessed it guys and dolls, I was having some difficulty, and the spell checker was no help, until, I had correctly spelled the word to one letter of correctness, it then gave the correct spelling, before that, the spell checker didn't have a clue. Oh, by the way, WORD cannot spell God (the long version) either, it’s been that way since day one, and, in whatever units you count in it’s a ‘phucking’ long time.

The Worldwide Conspiracy of Silence: Isn't Ironic Don't You Think?

The Bookshop Guru

Did you know that farm animals such as cows are being found worldwide with horrific mutilations, seemingly, performed with extraordinary surgical precision without leaving any trace of blood?  And there is a conspiracy because it would take more than one sick individual to conceive and conduct a worldwide experiment of animal cruelty.

Now, you have to ask the question: why is this happening? From the worldwide evidence, it is obvious that a monumental experiment is taking place, but the logic of why these cow mutilations are taking place baffles me. Why would you select cows (across many of the breeds (around 800)) from different parts of the world, unless you were looking for something like pathogens and antigens, because all cow breeds stem from one species (Bos taurus)? Je sais pas, but it's plausible.
Click Below and Listen

Now, the second question to ask is: who is responsible? You, perhaps, may assume that our governments were the culprits, but I don’t agree with that assumption. You see if our governments wanted to conduct experiments on animals in this way they would conduct their experiments in secret, not in public. The evidence suggests an alien presence, because of the worldwide phenomena and the level of sophistication used to perform these mutilations without leaving any trace of blood, seemingly alien to known technology. The non-believers to this premise should look at the evidence and the logic, because unless you are psychic that is the only way you will know the truth. And we should remember that the truth never lies only people do.

The next question to ask is: why are our governments silent on this phenomenon? Je sais pas.
