Short Story ~ 'The Zombie Has Cometh' (Part 2)

That morning, global news broadcasts were speculating on the size of the object hitting the earth and why the authorities hadn’t given a warning even though the suspected asteroid had landed in an uninhabited region of the ‘Gobi’ desert. The nearest town or village was reported to be approximately 14o kilometers from the suspected debris area.  The nearest village to the suspected landing was named after a granddaughter of the prophet Mohammed.

The village had only a sparse and somewhat nomadic population according to the C.I.A. file displayed on Frank Santanoli’s computer screen. As Frank stroked his bald head and noted the information on the computer screen his commander was on the phone wanting an update.

“What have you got, Santanoli?” Frank was busy compiling his thoughts before revealing them to his senior commander his answer. He was still puzzled at what the data on his computer screen was showing. “I’m not sure, boss…”

“What do you mean?” asked Michael Stubbs the section chief of the C.I.A (Central Intelligence Agency) based at Langley, Virginia over the secure phone line.

“It landed approximately 140 kilometers from a village called Ayisha, but, I think, we have a problem, either with the source data or another Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) has just entered our airspace and landed without clearance and notification,” Frank remarked candidly.

“Well, as soon as you know the better…you better get out there and find out what landed. Remember, this is a need-to-know mission with level one clearance.” Stubbs was quick to terminate the call, as he had other assholes waiting to speak to him, which was his view of most of his staff that were quick to judge him, but most never had the balls in front of their commander to put their money where their mouth was. It was the same subordinates who were waiting to speak to him on other phone lines as he sat observing the scene from the comfort of his chauffeur-driven vehicle. His black limousine was carefully making its way through the rush hour traffic as it made its way to the White House along ‘Patriot’s Avenue’ renamed after the defeat of the enemies of the United States during the years fighting terrorism. Apart from the rain and the noise of the traffic, the air-conditioned interior provided a comfort Michael Stubbs had gotten used to. ‘Power corrupts, but without it, there is no light,’ he used to say to himself and others when the occasion permitted.

The overnight flight from Langley Air Force Base to Mongolia allowed Frank Santanoli time to consider his options. The local Mongolian operative was at Chinggis Khaan International Airport to greet Frank as he departed the CIA corporate jet.

“Hope you had a pleasant journey, Mr. Santanoli?”

Frank already knew everything to know about the local asset. He had already read the file on the local CIA operative at Langley before leaving. “Yes, glad you pulled the right strings with the military here, Armed,” Frank said as they shook hands.

“Have Langley briefed you?”

“No. Only that you requested a helicopter.”

“Good. We are going as they say asteroid hunting.”

“The helicopter is over there, ready and waiting,” Armed remarked as he pointed out the helicopter on the far side of the airport.

“How far is the village called Ayisha from here and also the suspected debris area from the asteroid that came down?” Frank already knew the distance he just wanted to test Armed on his skills of preparedness.

“About an hour to Ayisha, and then another hour perhaps, depending on weather conditions. The helicopter is under military control, so we don’t have a say on that score.”

“You know this village then?”

“Yes, it’s famous for many reasons,” Armed replied.

“No time to waste, let’s get going.”

***
“Commander, there’s an aircraft approaching.”

Iron Smart could see the aircraft on its defense system. The alien spacecraft’s automated computer system was already locked on and ready to take offensive action if it needed to.

“We are protected with our shield and cloaked invisible to their technology,” Iron Smart said to his second-in-command Shogi.

“We will see what they do.”

***
The helicopter flew past the alien spacecraft several times as it circled the area before landing in a clearing beside a sand dune.

“According to my GPS coordinates we are in the exact area where the fallout from the asteroid hit,” Frank remarked to Armed.

As Frank and Armed searched the area they could find no debris from an asteroid, perhaps, the computer data was wrong, Frank thought.

“Are we really looking for the remains of an asteroid?” asked Armed.

“I was wondering when you were going to ask,” Frank replied.

“No. A UFO crashed here somewhere or it landed. Well, that’s what our computer tracking told us.”

“How do you know it was a UFO?” asked Armed.

“Well, asteroids don’t slow down.”

The Secret of Enlightenment

The search for enlightenment can take many different paths for the individual concerned, but in the end our progress through life should be with nature and not against it. Throughout history many great inspirational people have strived in their time to influence mankind to make the world a better place to live in. Some of the greatest advances in technology, medicine, and science have come about through the enlightenment of individuals who have said that they received their inspiration from their dreams or the practice of meditation.

Steve Jobs (Apple fame) said that he found the inspiration for the iPhone from the practice of meditation. There are many more examples where the subconscious has played a major role in illuminating the minds of great inventors. Why our subconscious mind acts in this way is a mystery, but then again so is the universe.

Currently, science cannot answer the mystery of our subconscious or indeed how thoughts are generated in the conscious mind. Philosophers over the centuries have pondered on the mystery of the subconscious and the conscious mind in an effort to rationalise human thought and its existence without much success. René Descartes (philosopher, mathematician, and scientist) said, “cogito ergo sum,” translated into English: “I think, therefore I am,” which means if I doubted my existence than either someone else is doing the doubting or I exist. Descartes believed CLICK HERE FOR MORE...

Living with Dementia

Well, many of you that read this article will probably not agree with what you about to read, but the truth sometimes hurts and it has to be confronted. My experience comes from looking after my grandmother who lived to the grand age of ninety-six. The last years of my grandmother’s life was spent in a residential home for people with dementia. Dementia is a chronic and progressive disorder of the brain to function normally and involves symptoms such as visual impairment, memory loss, thinking, problem solving, and language abilities and varies to each individual depending on environmental conditions that may have contributed to the onset of the disorder such as Alzheimer’s disease or a sequence of strokes.

Now, looking back my grandmother spent around fifteen years possible more doubly incontinent which means she had to wear a nappy for her bladder and bowel functions the same as a baby. At the same time my grandmother never recognized me when I visited her, which I did on a regular basis. Throughout this time period she was often spoon feed again much like a baby. I also noticed many of the other residents (perhaps we should call them patients as we do if they are in a hospital) having to be spoon feed and no doubt were probably doubly incontinent as well.

On my many visits to the residential home I got to know some of the other residents (patients), inasmuch as how they were glad to see other people visiting because I was told by the care staff that some of the residents never saw any relatives, perhaps this was because they had out lived them or had living relatives that didn’t care I don’t know, but from my experience it’s not easy to see the possible future and it wasn’t easy for me.

All this happened in a period of twenty-five to ten years ago before the UK government took dementia as a serious growing problem and invested money into research and preventative medication. I knew back then that dementia was a worldwide problem and wondered why governments hadn’t taken it seriously from what I had read on the Internet and why there was no medication available to lessen the effects of dementia for my grandmother.

From my experience the care staff dealing with dementia residents (patients) need to be better trained, paid, and need to be able to cope with residents (patients) that can be overly demonstrative and difficult to deal with on par with mentally ill patients.  We all have a habit of wanting to turn away from things that upset our cosy little world, especially, when we see the possible future for many of us and I know I did, but I was given the responsibility that I couldn’t ignore and I didn’t enjoy even though my grandmother had treated me without any real love for me as she acted as my mother and brought me up from the age of twelve and a half.

Perhaps, God in all wisdom wanted to see how I would react and cope as just another test for me, I don’t know, but seeing a possible future many of us will experience doesn’t make sense to me?

You, Me and Bipolar

It’s been about 10 years since I was first diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and before that, from about the age of 16 years old I have suffered from depression. In fact, I believe my many visits to doctors from the age of 16 years old I never got the correct diagnosis; it was always ‘you have depression’ and I was given some medication (antidepressants without mood stabilizers, which was completely wrong)  and that was about it.

Yes, you could say things have changed since then, but have they? Most doctors that I have seen over the years have very little experience or empathy for people suffering from depression or Bipolar disorder; in my opinion. In fact, I wonder how doctors are trained these days because some seem to lack common sense when it comes to being able to assess a patient’s needs. A few years ago, my grandmother was in a residential home for the elderly supposedly being looked after by the care staff, yet, it took three different doctors and three months to diagnose my grandmother had a fractured femur In that time the doctors and care staff could not recognize why my grandmother would grimace when she was made to move (an obvious sign she was in pain) from her chair and before this fracture, she was a woman who was very actively walking around the residential home. Now, do you see what I mean, either the doctors don’t care for patients who are elderly or they just lack common sense; in my opinion, they (doctors, and care staff) lack common sense because someone who is normally active and then becomes reluctant to move and shows signs of in pain when they try to move them should have been enough for any sensible person to figure out. And, all this happened in North Devon, England and the culprits (doctors) were from (Northam Surgery, Bay View Road, Northam, Bideford, North Devon EX39 1AZ, UK). So, do you see what I mean?

In fact, most people have a simple view of depression they equate it with their experience of day-to-day living when sometimes they may feel depressed about something, but manic depression now called Bipolar disorder is a completely different ‘kettle of fish’ that has nothing to do with normal depression which most normal people will have from time to time.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Bipolar disorder some believe that it is a product of environmental (childhood abuse or similar stresses occurring through the patient’s life) factors or some form of genetic factors (chemical imbalance in the brain) playing a part. In my opinion, it’s most likely to be a combination of the two factors of inherited genes (or chemical imbalance) and the patient’s childhood stresses.

In my case, I have suffered from both because in my childhood I experienced a lot of grief and I most likely inherited (from my grandfather who hung himself) and my dad who suffered from severe black depression the defective genes or chemical imbalance in the brain. I chose to write this article to highlight some of the issues regarding Bipolar disorder and how it affects me and possibly you.

My second bookIt’s Never Too Late’ is not just about how I have coped over the years with Bipolar disorder; it’s written using a series of true stories that I have experienced from childhood to the present day to help explain and help other people understand Bipolar and perhaps help them cope with this debilitating disease. I sincerely hope the book helps; because you, me, and bipolar need all the help we can get.

You will find other articles and stories that I have written concerning how Bipolar has affected me on this website and on my other website  ‘Never Late But Sorry,’ please search them out and read them and perhaps they will help you; I sincerely hope so.

The Economic Triangle of Europe, China, and America

The global recession that is now about to show its hand started when Germany insisted on austerity for most of Europe more than three years ago. In a sense, Germany shot itself in the foot by insisting on this austerity policy for Europe which caused a slowdown in demand not just in Europe, but also in China. Its taken about three years of depressed demand to fully show up in China’s economy but now it has taken hold with many ghost towns where literally every factory is deserted and unfinished building projects resemble some sort of nuclear accident. What people fail to understand is the level of unemployment is rising in China and there is no state aid and the Chinese are natural savers and not spenders, so the move to a consumer led economy will be hard to achieve given these facts.

Click Below and Listen

With many American companies relying on trade with China and Europe the feedback loop equally affects the American economy which hadn’t really recovered from the 2008 financial  crisis with many Americans on low wages and unable to spend. The commodities downturn which is ultimately dependent on demand has been savage and affects many emerging economies again adding to weak demand for export led economies such as Germany and so the feedback loop feeds the global recession.

With negative interest rates in Europe and Japan this shows that these policies are not working and the only reasonable policy is to spend money on infrastructure and increase the level of wages for the low paid to a living wage and watch as their respective economies grow. Without this type of policy that serves the greatest majority (the low paid) and interest rates between 2 and 4% we will have more unrealistic asset bubbles that will only create a greater inequality in society and lead eventually to a breakdown of social cohesion.

I believe governments around the world can avoid the worst of a global recession by seizing the moment by spending money on new innovation and technology that provides solutions to climate change such as Solar Power Stations, All Electric Vehicles, Wind and Wave Power, and Environmental Schemes to Clean up Pollution.

It doesn’t make any sense for countries such as Brazil to be spending billions on hosting the Olympics yet they pour raw sewage into the sea.

The Age of the Combustion Engine is Over

Yes, the future is now, otherwise your children will inherit an Earth more like a toilet. If the combustion engine had never been invented, then most likely the world would be a healthier place for all creatures, instead we have to breathe in lots of pollution. If you don’t think you are breathing in lots of population, then, try not picking your nose at night. Remember, it wasn’t that long ago when our governments said, “Use leaded petrol it perks you up and its good for the car” only to find after many years of use throughout the world that we were accidently killing ourselves and our children with harmful pollutants which our governments failed to test for.

Those harmful lead and other pollutants are still out there in the environment being blown about with the other more recent and current pollution. I know we are breathing in large amounts of pollution from what I said about picking your nose the evidence is evident. You perhaps think that if you live somewhere like on the coast the air will be fresh, well; you are mistaken because I live on the coast and believe me I have to pick my nose every night; it’s no joke, pollution is a major problem that most people seem to ignore as long as they are driving around in the latest gas guzzler. The trouble with pollutants is they don’t leach out of your body and the long term build-up of pollutants in your body is anyone’s guess.

So, instead of just thinking about you, which is a common trait of the human (homo sapiens sapiens) species, it is about time you considered your children and other people.

That is why Volkswagen recently had a problem with some of its vehicles failing emission tests, because no matter how you shake it the emission testing is now more vigorous than it used to be or is it? If it wasn’t for some cheating software fix most of Volkswagen’s vehicles would have failed the current emission testing in America and some other European countries. To be frank, Volkswagen needs to forget about catalytic converters and design and sell all electric vehicles because that is the future and the future is now.

If people think you can wait until they have sucked every last barrel of oil out of the earth, then, you are on a different planet because by that time the world will most likely resemble a toilet and is that what you want your children to inherit?
