The Elusive Excluded Middle My Bipolar Dilemma

The Bookshop Guru

I find comedy a good remedy to help release those endorphins and would always be trying hard to find the excluded middle for I knew that this state of mind offered the safest route to a happier life. Whatever I did it was always in the back of my mind – to try and find the middle ground. This course of action wasn't easy because of the way bipolar affects how you behave, not always allowing you to exist in the middle apart from the extremes of the disorder. I had the tendency to start something new and then allowing that to take over my life. Finding equilibrium where I could do something without it overtaking everything else was a battle, but one which I knew I had to fight. It wasn't until I started to reflect on this, that I could see how this behaviour of extremes was affecting me. I knew that if I could find the excluded middle and stay there as much as possible then my life would be far happier and more productive. Being a manic depressive even I can see the funny side of life. Believe me it helps to laugh even at ourselves.

The more I looked at my actions the more I could recognise I was avoiding the middle ground. I found that having bipolar made me impulsive and unaware that the extremes of behaviour were not allowing me to pursue interests in a normal way. I would sometimes spend months pursuing one particular interest with a complete disregard to any other interests. This was a compulsive behaviour disorder brought about by bipolar. My compulsion was also destructive because after many months of interest in something I would suddenly stop doing it completely without finding some middle ground where I could at least still continue if only on an occasional basis. This state of play was hard to find. I would always start some new interest which would last several weeks or many months before I would stop completely. There was no middle ground for me. As I came to reflect on this behaviour, I realised I needed to find the excluded middle. It wouldn't be easy because in the past all my actions were in this part of the spectrum. But my thoughts were of finding some way of having interests and hobbies which I could pursue without it leading in a compulsive way. Somehow I knew I had to find the middle ground, my excluded middle.

Learning to curb my excessive actions that would lead to the extreme would give me a sounder basis for a happier life. I would spend many hours thinking about what I could do to change the way I was currently living my life. Even with the appropriate medication and enough exercise and sleep, I still found it hard to find the elusive excluded middle. I constantly strove to find a way to counteract the extremes that were driving my life which would ultimately lead to a deep dark depression or unsustainable high. I would start some new interest only for that to go the same way into a compulsion this is my bipolar dilemma. In my latest book “It’s Never Too Late” I discuss how love, money, and luck have thrown many curve balls at the roller-coaster ride of living with bipolar yet often provide many opportunities previously unseen.

The Incredible Story About the Diving Bell and the Butterfly

The Bookshop Guru

Book review of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" by Jean-Dominique Bauby

Have you ever heard the incredible story about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? It’s a true story written by Jean-Dominique Bauby; it captured my imagination and made me think long and hard about what I was doing with my life. I first heard about the story really by chance, I was flicking through the TV channels one night and I came across this documentary film which recalls the life of Jean-Dominique Bauby, who was once the editor of the fashionable French magazine Elle.

At first, I didn’t know if I would like to watch a film about someone who was so severely disabled. Honestly, we all have the urge sometimes not to look at things we don’t want to think about, we would rather think about something else instead. We all do it, look the other way, afraid maybe that somehow this might happen to us. Well, I persevered and enjoyed the love of life the film gave me, even though Jean-Dominique Bauby was the soul that life had dealt such a cruel twist.

The film was a portrait memoir of the book The Diving Bell and the Butterfly that was written solely by Jean-Dominique Bauby blinking his left eye lid. Suffering at the age of 43 a massive stroke Bauby was left paralysed and speechless apart from the ability to use his left eye for communication.

By using ESA, a technique that uses the frequency of letters of the French language Bauby was able to dictate words, sentences and eventually the book with the aid of his editor. Every word counts in this book, you know that Bauby’s effort was enormous, never lingering always with purpose.

That’s why I say ‘Live the dream,’ don’t tell me you don’t have the time, we all have the same twenty four hours. Although Bauby’s book is a memoir of his life, it reminds me how little time we have and how precious our lives are. Each one counts, and to live our dreams, and hold life itself dear to our hearts. Jean-Dominique Bauby died of a heart attack on March 9th 1997 two days after the book was published in France.

I can only say go out and read this book and learn how a man coped within a shell, living the suffocation of a diving bell existence and at the same time releasing the butterflies of his imagination to the world.

So I say ’live the dream,’ and go out and do whatever it is you want from life. Let your mind be free to dream and in those dreams that may come, do not say, I have no time, for we all have the same time the same twenty four hours. So remember there’s an old saying, “It’s a fool that never reads a book.” As I turn another corner in my life.

A Love Story with a Difference

The Bookshop Guru

A book review of "Travels on My Elephant" by Mark Shand

A few years ago, I traveled to India with a friend, a photographer, to photograph the Bengal tiger in its natural habitat. We spent several weeks, in the jungle, tracking the elusive Bengal tiger, and every day aloft in a howdah (a wooden cradle) abreast of an elephant. I always had a love of animals, but, after spending several weeks with elephants, I became more aware of this love. Part of my role was to record and write an account of our travels. I decided to seek out more information about rural India, I wanted a different perspective, and by chance, I found a book by Mark Shand called ‘Travels on My Elephant.’

At night avoiding the mosquitoes I started to read Mark’s book and found myself falling in love. The book is about Mark’s trek across 1600 km of India with a female elephant called Tara. Mark’s book is a documentary of the real India and how he ended up falling in love with Tara. As I turned each page I got to know Tara and could not stop myself from feeling the same as Mark. Each day I spent with the elephants in the jungle tracking tigers my understanding of their plight became more pronounced.

I won’t tell you what happened to Tara because I think it’s up to you to find out. All I can say is that love is a many-flavored spring, it can appear and sprout from anywhere, just as it did for me each day with beautiful glimpses into the lives of these amazing animals.
