The Secret of Enlightenment

The search for enlightenment can take many different paths for the individual concerned, but in the end our progress through life should be with nature and not against it. Throughout history many great inspirational people have strived in their time to influence mankind to make the world a better place to live in. Some of the greatest advances in technology, medicine, and science have come about through the enlightenment of individuals who have said that they received their inspiration from their dreams or the practice of meditation.

Steve Jobs (Apple fame) said that he found the inspiration for the iPhone from the practice of meditation. There are many more examples where the subconscious has played a major role in illuminating the minds of great inventors. Why our subconscious mind acts in this way is a mystery, but then again so is the universe.

Currently, science cannot answer the mystery of our subconscious or indeed how thoughts are generated in the conscious mind. Philosophers over the centuries have pondered on the mystery of the subconscious and the conscious mind in an effort to rationalise human thought and its existence without much success. René Descartes (philosopher, mathematician, and scientist) said, “cogito ergo sum,” translated into English: “I think, therefore I am,” which means if I doubted my existence than either someone else is doing the doubting or I exist. You, Me and Bipolar

It’s been about 10 years since I was first diagnosed with Bipolar disorder and before that, from about the age of 16 years old I have suffered from depression. In fact, I believe my many visits to doctors from the age of 16 years old I never got the correct diagnosis; it was always ‘you have depression’ and I was given some medication (antidepressants without mood stabilizers, which was completely wrong)  and that was about it.

Yes, you could say things have changed since then, but have they? Most doctors that I have seen over the years have very little experience or empathy for people suffering from depression or Bipolar disorder; in my opinion. In fact, I wonder how doctors are trained these days because some seem to lack common sense when it comes to being able to assess a patient’s needs. A few years ago, my grandmother was in a residential home for the elderly supposedly being looked after by the care staff, yet, it took three different doctors and three months to diagnose my grandmother had a fractured femur In that time the doctors and care staff could not recognize why my grandmother would grimace when she was made to move (an obvious sign she was in pain) from her chair and before this fracture, she was a woman who was very actively walking around the residential home. Now, do you see what I mean, either the doctors don’t care for patients who are elderly or they just lack common sense; in my opinion, they (doctors, and care staff) lack common sense because someone who is normally active and then becomes reluctant to move and shows signs of in pain when they try to move them should have been enough for any sensible person to figure out. And, all this happened in North Devon, England and the culprits (doctors) were from (Northam Surgery, Bay View Road, Northam, Bideford, North Devon EX39 1AZ, UK). So, do you see what I mean?

In fact, most people have a simple view of depression they equate it with their experience of day-to-day living when sometimes they may feel depressed about something, but manic depression now called Bipolar disorder is a completely different ‘kettle of fish’ that has nothing to do with normal depression which most normal people will have from time to time.

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Bipolar disorder some believe that it is a product of environmental (childhood abuse or similar stresses occurring through the patient’s life) factors or some form of genetic factors (chemical imbalance in the brain) playing a part. In my opinion, it’s most likely to be a combination of the two factors of inherited genes (or chemical imbalance) and the patient’s childhood stresses.

In my case, I have suffered from both because in my childhood I experienced a lot of grief and I most likely inherited (from my grandfather who hung himself) and my dad who suffered from severe black depression the defective genes or chemical imbalance in the brain. I chose to write this article to highlight some of the issues regarding Bipolar disorder and how it affects me and possibly you.

My second bookIt’s Never Too Late’ is not just about how I have coped over the years with Bipolar disorder; it’s written using a series of true stories that I have experienced from childhood to the present day to help explain and help other people understand Bipolar and perhaps help them cope with this debilitating disease. I sincerely hope the book helps; because you, me, and bipolar need all the help we can get.

You will find other articles and stories that I have written concerning how Bipolar has affected me on this website and on my other website  ‘Never Late But Sorry,’ please search them out and read them and perhaps they will help you; I sincerely hope so.

A Review of ‘The Moveable Feast’ by Ernest Hemingway

The Bookshop Guru
A master storyteller is how I would describe Hemingway. Those of you that have read his most popular and well known novels need no introduction into how the clarity and originality of his stories grip you from the beginning. I was intrigued when I found this book, because although it’s described as fiction, it is really an account of him as a poor and struggling unknown writer living in Paris in the 1920’s. His memories have a bouquet that lingers and captivates you into understanding much more about the man, almost as if you can smell and taste the wine as he recalls the café life. Hemingway describes Paris as a great treasure given to you, and regardless of how poor you are, you could still live and work well there. You could take Paris with you wherever you went and so ‘The Moveable Feast.’

Hemingway recalls his encounters with other writers such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and many more. Interestingly, his early confidence is best described as ‘unsure’ without the authority of a novel to his name. His friend Fitzgerald talks about his latest book ‘The Great Gatsby’ and how good reviews hadn’t translated into meaningful sales. Hemingway then recalls how he spent a whole morning of work just to write a paragraph and he wasn’t sure how he could ever write anything as long as a novel. But he also recalls his disapproval of Fitzgerald’s practice of changing short stories to suit the twists required for magazine submission. Hemingway describes this practice as ‘whoring,’ but Fitzgerald says he has no choice as he needs the money to fund the writing of future books.

Throughout the meandering of life as a young writer Hemingway leads you into his world and shares with you all the beauty of living and loving life. There is a vibrancy of colour in the way the words make it onto the page of the story, which is how Hemingway recalls his early struggle to tell a story.

A great read!

The Million Dollar Question and Answer ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 20 Playoffs

The Bookshop Guru

The Indianapolis Colts face New England Patriots in Sunday’s live match. I fancy the Patriots to win the game. The consensus is around 55% in favour with the Patriots, and the bookies make the Patriots the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Tom Brady vs Andrew Luck and I prefer Brady. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Patriots at home. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 6.5 point game? So, that probably means the Patriots will win against the spread.  Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

The Million Dollar Question and Answer ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 11

The Bookshop Guru

The Philadelphia Eagles face Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s live match. When did you see a 6.5 point dog with a 7-2 record? But, I still fancy the Packers to win the game. The Packers are 4-0 at home this season, and I expect the conditions will play into the hands of the Packers, combined with an on fire Aaron Rodgers quarterback. The consensus is around 80% in favour with the Packers, so that probably means the bookies favourite will win the game. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 6.5 point game? So, that probably means the + 6.5 for the Eagles will not be enough to beat the Packers on the spread.  I also fancy going over on the total point line. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game! Philadelphia Eagles 17, Green Bay Packers 38

Why I Fade My Trades? The Comic Speaks

The Bookshop Guru

As the markets begin to tumble the euro/dollar on the Forex is up and down like a Yoyo. My strategy is at the very last second before I execute that trade, I “fade” my trades. In simple terms the opposite trade? Why, you ask? Well, the way our brain’s work, and in my case the analysis of previous trades shows the profitability. And, remember “you don't win on every trade” you win over time because of the increased profits of these trades.

Now, where is that mirror on the wall.  In a three horse race, now, that is different, and so on and on. The unlikeliness of an event happening is often the outcome. Just a thought.
