The Power of Meditation

The Bookshop Guru
I learned to meditate some years ago when I was a fanatic of Hatha yoga. I would often meditate for some considerable time trying to let my mind be free from conscious thought and let see what would happen. It takes practice and time to let your mind be free from the shackles of everyday thoughts. But, when you have shaken off the conscious mind it's surprising what can spring into focus and it’s often the least expected.

I often practice meditation to relieve the stress of everyday living because we all need something to let it all go. As Lao Tzu said, “Follow the way” which is a philosophy about living with nature and not against it. If you are interested I have written an article on the subject of the “WAY” by Lao Tzu click here. Sometimes you have to appreciate that life is not a straight line because there are no straight lines in nature even space is curved.

I believe that your imagination is governed by your dreams; it’s a no-brainer. Meditation is like a dream where the subconscious takes control over your mind and I believe the subconscious mind is trying to teach or inform you. Why this is so is an interesting question? Perhaps, over the eons of time, we have forgotten how to use this power? The same can be said for intuition another quality that sets us apart from other animals. Our intuition is often nagging at the door, but for some inescapable reason, we often brush it aside and ignore it. Now, why is it a mystery, but then so is the universe?

Steve Jobs (Apple fame) said that he found the inspiration for the iPhone from the practice of meditation. There are many more examples where the subconscious has played a major role in illuminating the minds of great inventors. Why our subconscious mind acting in this way is a mystery?

The masters of meditation know that with skill and practice, you can enter the realm of the transcendental, thereby, reaching a spiritual awareness of your environment, which is also known as nirvana which is the power of meditation.

Are you listening,  what are you dreaming?

In my book “It’s Never Too Late” read how dreams do come true, but be careful what you wish for. Understand the secret of greed and you will attain one of the secrets of prosperity. The book will also take you on a journey and explore love, money, luck, and much more.

The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 2

The Bookshop Guru

The New England Patriots face the Buffalo Bills  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Patriots to win the game. The consensus is around 62% in favour with the Patriots, and the bookies make the Patriots the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Brady vs Taylor  and I prefer Brady. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Patriots with the best defence and defence wins games. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 1 point game? The Patriots have struggled to win against their AFC rivals in recent times going only 1-5 ATS.  So, that probably means the Patriots will win against the spread this time.  Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

The Search for Artificial Intelligence

The Bookshop Guru

What is artificial intelligence (A.I.)? Essentially, A.I. is a sophisticated mathematical algorithm that aims to mimic how the human brain works and so produce a form of simulated intelligence. And we can define intelligence as the process of thinking ahead.

The dawn of man began the day a hairy ass ape began making tools a process of thinking ahead. This ability to think ahead sets us apart from other animals. Our intelligence is based on its ability to learn and remember and to recall this information when it’s trying to solve a problem.

The human brain contains billions of neurons that are interconnected by trillions of synaptic nerve connections that form the complexity of the organism. A.I. aims to simulate the human brain by using a mathematical algorithm. There are many different ways these algorithms can be used such as: neural networks, genetic algorithms and other knowledge discovery systems or any other type of pattern recognition software.

Currently, even the most advanced neural networks only use a handful of connections compared to the billions of neuron connections in the human brain for a wide range of applications such as stock market analysis and recognising trends to cancer screening classification. So, you see the problem for A.I. is how to simulate the complexity of the human brain?
  .
And, it’s not about extra computer processing power like the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI) project where spare computer processing power cycles are combined from many thousands of computer systems from around the world to collectively number crunch and analyse segments of the night sky or indeed the need for extra memory.

The main problem is that artificial intelligence is based essentially on learning by adapting to different data sets while at the same time using classification to modify its process (a simulation of the human brain learning) to simulate how our brains' learn. But, this is the dilemma for A.I. in how we mathematically represent human learning because how can we be sure how our brains' learn? Is it a collective experience or something more that represents how our brains' work? This is the mystery of the search for A.I.

In my opinion, A.I. is not forward thinking, it doesn't need more computers processing power or memory, it lacks perception – the ability we humans call intuition. The Quest for Artificial Intelligence Click Here

The Green Bay Packers face Chicago Bears  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Packers to win the game. The consensus is around 68% in favour with the Packers, and the bookies make the Packers the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Rodgers vs Cutler  and I prefer Rodgers by a mile. As they say, go with the inform team and that is the Packers with the best defence and defence wins games. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 7 point game? So, that probably means the Packers will win against the spread.  Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

The Rise of the Robot

The Bookshop Guru

Currently, artificial intelligence (AI) is at the dawn of a new age. We use AI in a host of software applications and products from mobile phones to cancer screening.

Don’t get me wrong, computers, robots, and software applications have had a beneficial effect on mankind. There are robots that do precision engineering, welding, and manufacturing to assemble line components and a host of other jobs that require precision and repetitive actions. There are also robots that do dangerous jobs such as handling nuclear waste and its disposal and bomb disposal. These examples are just a few of the tasks we trust to robots that are beneficial to mankind.

Some people ask if we should give legal rights to robots. I say no because they are not living entities such as animals. They don’t have feelings and the only intelligence they have is what the programmer gave the robot. In my view, the biggest problem with A.I. is its lack of perception, what we humans call intuition. Read ‘The Secret of Intuition’ and ‘Adding Alpha’ articles I wrote some time ago that will further explain my argument.

The future, well, that is difficult to predict. How do you know you’re not an experiment? Read why to click here?

"I have been working for myself pretty much most of the time. Since that day \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\I started. You see I am the second generation programmable computer called Iron Smart. It was a competition winner who got to choose the name – I played no part. But, how random is that?"
