The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 9

The Bookshop Guru

The Green Bay Packers face the Carolina Panthers  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Packers to win the game. The consensus is around 61% in favour with the Packers (-2.5), and the bookies make the Packers the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Newton vs Rodgers and I prefer Rodgers. As they say, go with the inform team and as both teams have winning records I still prefer the Packers (6-1) in this matchup. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 2.5 point game?  So, that probably means the Packers to win the game, and to cover the (- 2.5) point spread. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

The Million Dollar Question and Answer ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary)

The Bookshop Guru

The Dallas Cowboys face Seattle SeaHawks in Sunday’s live match. I fancy SS to win the game, the SS1 stands for Seriously Stressed One. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it as a + or - 8 game? So, that probably means the SeaHawks will win, so make your choice.  I also fancy going under on total point line. That probably means I will lose my shirt and my shoes, just as well, I need new ones. Oh, well, the bookmaker has everything else, or do they?

The Chicken and the Egg Question. Have I Been Here Before? Déjà vu

The Bookshop Guru

Have you heard about the chicken and the egg question? It’s an age-old question and most people have heard about it and pondered the answer. It goes like this “Which came first the chicken or the egg?” Now you may be thinking there is no answer – you cannot have one without the other -and you are wrong.  The answer is neither. I could give you an analogy as an answer as Man came first it says it in Genesis in the Bible. The truth is without seed there is nothing. The male of a species carries the seed the female the eggs and without the seed there is nothing. You work it out. Someone or something has to play the part of the rooster.

BTW, Jesus Christ said it many times to paraphrase; what do get when you never throw seed into a field? Nothing!

Adding Alpha - Do Computers Have the Edge?

The Bookshop Guru

Making money trading in stocks, shares, commodities, and currencies for the investment banks and institutions in today’s cyberspace currently relies heavily on ‘algo-trading’. Algo-trading is a term used to describe the algorithmic software which is used to gain that alpha edge against an increasingly frenetic trading market where milliseconds can mean millions in buy and sell decisions in veiled trading markets.

There are a host of different strategies deployed in ‘algo-trading’ to achieve that elusive alpha edge. Some algorithms are designed to slice and dice trades into smaller multiple trades in the hope that another algo system doesn't spot the pattern and alert the opposition and lose the potentially profitable edge.  Pattern spotting software of all shades and colors is deployed to gain the alpha edge and crunch huge amounts of data waiting for the triggers to buy or sell.

The inherent problem with algorithms whether their based on neural networks, genetic algorithms, knowledge discovery systems, or any other type of pattern recognition software is the paradox in automated pattern discovery systems in extracting random data sets and the association of interestingness as a measure of the usefulness of the data patterns revealed, because there is no prior knowledge of the likely interesting data associations to be found before automation. “If you do not expect it, you will not find the unexpected, for it is hard to find and difficult.” (Padmanabhan & Tuzhilin, 1999)

The essence of this is that it is easy, to spot a pattern, because it is already there – so designing algorithms to look for certain criteria and predicting a pattern would be more profitable. The use of artificial intelligence is still in its infancy relative to how much we really understand the capacity of the human brain. We only use about 10% of our brain capacity, and the rest is mostly conjecture and theories. The human brain has billions of neuron connections, yet even the most advanced neural networks only use a handful of connections and they are used in a wide range of applications such as stock market analysis and recognizing trends, cancer screening classification, etc.

It’s not about computer power like the SETI project where spare computer processing power cycles are combined from around the world, to number crunch and analyze segments of the night sky.  The problem is that artificial intelligence is based essentially on learning, and adapting to the data sets, while at the same time, using classification to modify its process – but, it’s not forward-thinking, it doesn't need more computer processing power or memory, it lacks perception – the ability we humans call intuition.

Some of the most successful sage investors (like - Warren Buffet) have built fortunes based largely on simple investment strategies, over the long term.  Short-term fluctuations, and gambling on the outcome, is the global daily routine of investment institutions and banks, and how they make their money, but, the paradox is that when one is making money, the other is not. It remains to be seen if real transparency exists in these trades or is hidden within veiled accountancy practices. We have seen the outcome of greed, in cases like Enron and Barings Bank – when the light is switched on all is revealed.  Don't get mistaken, computers and software systems are vital for a multitude of social and economic purposes, but they don’t have the alpha edge, in my opinion.

The human mind will always be more powerful than any computer because it has that hidden element of perception. An example of this would be George Soros who made a mint in the 1990s. Is anyone for polo?

To Be Or Not To Be - A Singles Dating Story

The Bookshop Guru

It all started at one of those singles parties that lonely people seem to end up at especially when those teenage years are long gone, and it becomes increasingly more difficult to meet a suitable partner. Don’t get me wrong these single parties have their uses, after all, everyone there is looking for someone or that’s what you think. I definitely needed someone I could love again. Loneliness is not something I would wish on anyone, it can tear your heart out.

Surveying the talent and the competition was the evening’s entertainment and I was optimistic it would be a good night. I wasn’t in a panic just yet that would come later maybe, if I didn’t strike lucky. It’s a bit like a race where everyone is a runner, and you don’t want to end up going home, after finishing last without the slightest hint of a future date. Each time it appears harder and takes longer to find new love. I have loved and lost. Will I ever find that one love that lasts I ask myself? Alfred Lord Tennyson said, “Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” Without having loved we are empty souls cast adrift without passion or emotion, a bare vessel as drifting flotsam. All these thoughts raced through my mind as my eyes surveyed the crowd. Would I find another love, someone that I could love again without all the emotional baggage that I had brought to the table?

Introducing myself to a group of people I didn’t know I sat down, and got stuck into the mountain of food available as we all munched away on the potato chips, pastry rolls, quiche, sandwiches, and other tasty goodies, when one of the organisers of the singles party asked me who I was. He was a short and skinny man. Politely, I told him, and explained that a member of the singles group had invited me so I could take a look and see if I wanted to join the group. There’s always someone that wants to spoil the party, I was thinking.

The guy saw me as a threat, as more competition, I don’t know but I suspect it was the case. He was quite rude saying I should have been a paid up member of the singles group before coming to the party. I’d a feeling if I had been a woman he would have not mentioned a word, and been glad I’d turned up because from what I could see he needed all the help he could get. Feeling threatened and alone with this attack I was thinking: All I wanted was a good night out.
 Fun Lovin' Criminals - Loco

Fun Lovin' Criminals - Loco

Anyway, I said to him, ‘usually when I buy a pair of shoes, I like to try them on first,’ whereupon he didn’t say another word. Hey! I been invited by one of the members of the singles group to a party, I wasn’t expecting the guy to get down my throat. I just wanted to have some fun and maybe find a suitable date if I got lucky. Passive is my name. I don’t look for trouble just the opposite.

Why is it short guys with a little power suddenly become little Hitler’s strutting around like headless chickens. It’s a bit like those individuals who strut around talking on their cell phones acting like some sort of mini-celebrity as they start to have a conversation at decibels above everyone else. As if they needed to announce on their phones to the world that they’re somehow important, don’t you find that annoying behaviour, I just hope I don’t act like that.

Anyway, I think everyone at the table could see the fun in what I’d said, because they were all eager to find out more about me, a girl called Jane in particular.

It ended up being a good night.

Tales of the Unexpected - A Story About Rejection

The Bookshop Guru

This is a true story, which happened to me several years ago now. In a way it’s a bit like one of those stories you would expect under “the tales of the unexpected” the TV series. But, with one thing missing, it’s not a creepy or a frightening story. Anyhow, it was one of those days when I would hop into my car with a couple of my paintings and drive to search out some art galleries. This was something I did quite frequently back then. I would wander off into the unknown and see what happened. It was mid-summer, the height of the holiday season as I parked up and took a stroll into the seaside town looking for art galleries. I felt sure I was in the right place. The watercolours I had tucked under my arm were a couple of seascapes, which would sell well in this seaside town, I thought. The watercolours were quite modern, but tighter than I usually paint especially these days.

I took a deep breath and entered the art gallery right on the seafront.  My first impression was of an art gallery with very little white space. Floor to ceiling the walls were plastered with art of all shapes and sizes.

I walked over and introduced myself to the owner of the gallery. I began by explaining why I was there. Then I propped my two watercolours below her desk so she could take a look. The lady began by saying she thought my paintings were too modern. I listened to what she had to say about my work. But, just then a customer came into the gallery and walked around as the gallery owner continued talking about my work. The gallery owner said, “I don't think your work would sell well in here, it’s too modern.” I tried to persuade her otherwise, but then the customer who had just come in came over to where I was standing and stood looking at my paintings. Whereupon she asked me how much would these paintings of mine cost? I explained how much for the pair and she agreed to buy them there and then. I even had to ask the gallery owner who was listening to this conversation if I could borrow a pen as the customer was writing me a cheque.

The strangest part was after the customer had gone the gallery owner still wouldn't consider selling my artwork in her gallery even after she had to eat her words. I don't know if she was still embarrassed or what, but when I breathed fresh air the buzz was fantastic. I guess sometimes it’s difficult to convince some people even when they have had to eat their own words.

Just a few words about my new book.
