How Robotic Are You?

Do you change your habits? What I mean is take the following scenario: Do you always do your food shopping on the same day (say a Friday evening after work) of the week? These patterns of behaviour almost become robotic and predictable and after a while determine your whole life to some extent. Inasmuch as your creative side of life is being pigeon holed and held back because you have allowed yourself to become robotic and zombie like.
Click Below and Listen

Why is this important, well, consider this: If you follow the same steps everyday then you are no more than a biological zombie and you are more than likely receptive to whatever propaganda or sublimely message that is being broadcast through the ‘gogglebox’ that you are watching (from the same seat in your home, I imagine). You are not only just another couch potato that is being turned into mash, but you are also a predictable vegetable.

I would also guess that you dream about the ‘American dream’ or would like to, so you probably do the lottery every week in the vain hope that lady luck will strike and not realising that the government sponsor these lotteries as opium for ‘the hoi polloi’ as a means of keeping people in hope.

The more predictable you become the more robotic you become and less likely to ever question what is really happening in the world around you and so be able to form a new understanding based on facts and evidence. It is then that the ‘status quo’ is revealed to be challenged and not spoon feed for you to consume. My grandfather would always say, “Don’t believe everything you read in newspapers, you have to read between the lines.” What my grandfather meant was seek out the truth don’t rely on other people’s assumptions because invariable they are wrong. And always question the propaganda that your government is selling.

Are you listening,  what are you dreaming?

The Enigma of the Cambrian Explosion

Have you heard about the evolutionary explosion that science cannot explain? Well, it happened around 540 million years ago and it’s called the Cambrian explosion. Why is it important, well, considering that Charles Darwin could not explain the reasons why and delayed the publication of his book the ‘Origin of Species?’ several times, while, he tried to explain through his theory of ‘natural selection’ the reasons why, but he couldn’t?

Click Below and Listen

Today, the scientific community is still baffled why the Cambrian explosion took place. Many scientists have strived to answer this question by explaining that every so often evolution will speed up from its usual progression and move forward in evolutionary terms by many factors without any obvious influences. This is can be viewed as rapid polymorphism in evolutionary time. But, those scientists that postulate this reason are forgetting one of the rules of science in cause and effect. In my view, we need to look deeper into the reasons why the Cambrian explosion took place so we can better understand the evolution of man. We know more about the history of the moon than the evolutionary history of mankind.

Before the Cambrian explosion most living organisms were essentially single cell organisms according to the fossil record, but, all of a sudden you had thousands of multicellular organisms (essentially classed as animals) such as Trilobites appearing in the early Cambrian fossil record. As most scientists have discounted environmental and climatic changes you have to ask the question: What caused the Cambrian explosion? As Darwin could not explain through his theory of ‘natural selection’ how the Cambrian explosion could have taken place; then, you have to say it’s a fairly big ‘missing link’ and one which the DNA of mankind and its ancestors had perhaps an alien starting point. What I mean is an asteroid delivering the genesis for multicellular organisms. Whatever happened to cause the Cambrian explosion; it wasn’t natural selection?

A Review of ‘The Moveable Feast’ by Ernest Hemingway

The Bookshop Guru
A master storyteller is how I would describe Hemingway. Those of you that have read his most popular and well known novels need no introduction into how the clarity and originality of his stories grip you from the beginning. I was intrigued when I found this book, because although it’s described as fiction, it is really an account of him as a poor and struggling unknown writer living in Paris in the 1920’s. His memories have a bouquet that lingers and captivates you into understanding much more about the man, almost as if you can smell and taste the wine as he recalls the cafĂ© life. Hemingway describes Paris as a great treasure given to you, and regardless of how poor you are, you could still live and work well there. You could take Paris with you wherever you went and so ‘The Moveable Feast.’

Hemingway recalls his encounters with other writers such as Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, James Joyce and many more. Interestingly, his early confidence is best described as ‘unsure’ without the authority of a novel to his name. His friend Fitzgerald talks about his latest book ‘The Great Gatsby’ and how good reviews hadn’t translated into meaningful sales. Hemingway then recalls how he spent a whole morning of work just to write a paragraph and he wasn’t sure how he could ever write anything as long as a novel. But he also recalls his disapproval of Fitzgerald’s practice of changing short stories to suit the twists required for magazine submission. Hemingway describes this practice as ‘whoring,’ but Fitzgerald says he has no choice as he needs the money to fund the writing of future books.

Throughout the meandering of life as a young writer Hemingway leads you into his world and shares with you all the beauty of living and loving life. There is a vibrancy of colour in the way the words make it onto the page of the story, which is how Hemingway recalls his early struggle to tell a story.

A great read!

The Most Important Number In Our Universe

Just think about it for a few seconds, minutes, weeks, months, or more if you like. What number comes to your mind? Now, to define the parameters think of whole numbers, not a fraction or negative numbers. It’s your choice, but, I’m trying to think ‘Outside the box’ as they say. I wonder if you have come to the same conclusion as I do? Have you heard about the singularity? Well, there are several singularities, but the one I am referring to: Is the ‘Technological singularity’, which was coined by Vernor Vinge (sci-fi author and scientist), It describes the point in time when superhuman artificially intelligent computers can continually make iterations of recursive self-improvement, thereby, he predicts the “ Human era will end.”

Click Below and Listen

Don’t get alarmed, even though that singularity is fast approaching. Vinge’s argument is sound, but I think, the human mind has the ability to perceive what we humans call intuition, which currently sets us apart from computers. There could come a time when superhuman artificially intelligent computers have developed the added ability of intuition and when this happens you have a singularity or an event horizon where you can’t predict reality through any means what will happen next. Thinking ‘Outside the box’ again the most important number in the universe is 'One' because zero doesn’t exist. You see, zero was invented by many early civilizations as a means to record and count numbers. Nothing is a figment of man’s imagination there is no such thing, so, one is another singularity. God said, "I am the one."

Short Story ~ 'The Zombie Has Cometh'

The Bookshop Guru

Turn off the light and take a deep breath, it took thousands of years before humanity would know the secret that had been hidden for so long, but the time had come for the world to know. The word ‘Zombie’ was not just a fictional characterization in a Hollywood film or book, but a reality only ‘Iron Smart’ knew, an artificially intelligent robot sent to earth on a final mission.

“We are entering the planet’s gravity wave”

As the alien craft slowed and entered the earth’s upper atmosphere, the craft immediately began searching the terrain for a suitable landing.  The craft’s internal computer system had selected a remote part of the ‘Gobi’ desert.

“Commander, we have safely landed and deployed the shield.”

Meanwhile, Aaron was just waking up from a bad dream as the sun began to rise. It was something his friend Jim had said to him the night before at the observatory, just think he said, “If alien craft gets to us before we get to them their technology would be ‘worlds apart’ and could be deadly.”

Later that morning, Professor Aaron Mikovitz and  Jim were busy checking the overnight email alerts sent by various observatories from around the world that were busy watching the night sky for near-earth objects as part of the Global Eyes project set up by various governments, to provide an early warning system from asteroids and comets colliding with Earth.

“Take a look at this, Aaron.”
As Aaron read the message, he remembered his dream again.

“This shows it came down in the ‘Gobi’ desert, approximately 3.30 am local time. We have not had any damage or casualty reports from this area; so, it’s more than likely another one of those upper atmospheric air explosions.”

“Don’t be quick to jump to assumptions, Jim. Remember, we are scientists who follow the evidence that leads us to the truth. Whatever that may be?”

“That’s strange….”

“What’s strange? Don’t keep it to yourself, Aaron.”

As Aaron pulled up a series of reports from the computer screen; it made no sense to him or Jim. They were both puzzled at what they saw on their computer screens.

“It entered our atmosphere but left no chemical trace, it must be a malfunction of the data recovery systems,” Jim said as he tried to check other computer data systems on his computer terminal to verify the information.

“If that asteroid disintegrated in the Gobi, it must be there,” Aaron said, as he checked and rechecked the data. “Asteroids don’t do that!”

Jim asked, perplexed at Aaron’s statement, “What don’t they do?”

The Million Dollar Question ( NFL Sunday Football Comic Diary) Week 9

The Bookshop Guru

The Green Bay Packers face the Carolina Panthers  in Sunday’s live game. I fancy the Packers to win the game. The consensus is around 61% in favour with the Packers (-2.5), and the bookies make the Packers the favourite in this matchup. For me it’s all about the quarterbacks, Newton vs Rodgers and I prefer Rodgers. As they say, go with the inform team and as both teams have winning records I still prefer the Packers (6-1) in this matchup. Who invented the spread, the bookies, and the way they see it, as a + or – 2.5 point game?  So, that probably means the Packers to win the game, and to cover the (- 2.5) point spread. Whatever happens, I will enjoy the game!

Why Do We Fail To Follow Our Intuition Most Of The Time?

The Bookshop Guru
Why do we fail to follow our intuition most of the time?  Why is it a mystery, but so is the universe? I believe, that our intuition is our sixth sense.  Perhaps, over the eons of time and evolution, we have forgotten how to rely on our intuition, after all, what’s the point of it being there if we don’t trust it and use it? But, for some inescapable reason, we do not trust our intuition most of the time.

Now, consider what RenĂ© Descartes (philosopher, mathematician, and scientist) said, “cogito ergo sum,” translated into English: “I think, therefore I am,” which means if I doubted my existence then either someone else is doing the doubting or I exist. Descartes believed that sensory perceptions were spontaneous, and of free will, and so came to him from a world outside his mind, and that God would not deceive him.

It’s as if someone else was controlling our thoughts on some decisions we fail to follow our gut instinct or intuition and sometime later we regret not following our intuition. You have to admit to yourself that’s how it goes for most of us humans and I use the ‘Almighty’ word of ‘Human,’ because as for as we know we are the only species of animal that has the ability to act on their intuitions in an egocentric manner.

Conscience is a guiding force so logic would suggest our intuition must be another guiding force similar to the Star Wars “May the force be with you” words used in the story. Just because science at present cannot describe human thoughts or our intuitions we should not forget it was only a few years ago we realized there was more to the universe than just our ‘Milky Way.’ Imagine, that, just like a fish in a fishbowl.

Can I prove to you that our intuition is our sixth sense? Well, it’s easy to tell a cat from a pack of dogs. If you need proof, then ask yourself this question: What is the most important number in the universe? When you have the answer you will see the logic of the answer. “If you do not expect it, you will not find the unexpected, for it is hard to find and difficult.” (Padmanabhan & Tuzhilin, 1999)
